If you have landed here, there is a good chance you are either already in love with a Lhasa Apso or seriously thinking about becoming one of the club. Good choice. These small, ancient dogs have been charming (and bossing around) their owners for over a thousand years, and they show no signs of slowing down.

At LhasaLife, we live and breathe Lhasa Apsos. Our resident Lhasa, Poppy, has taught us more about this breed than any textbook ever could. She is stubborn, hilarious, fiercely loyal, and convinced she runs the house. Spoiler: she does.

What makes Lhasa Apsos different from other small breeds?

Lhasa Apsos are not your typical small dog. Originally bred as sentinel dogs in Tibetan monasteries, they carry themselves with a confidence that bigger breeds would envy. They are independent thinkers with a watchdog instinct that catches most new owners off guard. Where other small breeds might be clingy or nervous, a Lhasa will size up a situation, decide whether you are worth trusting, and then sit on your feet anyway.

Their coat is another thing entirely. That long, flowing hair is gorgeous but it does not maintain itself. If you are considering a Lhasa, be prepared for regular grooming sessions or a relationship with a good groomer. We have plenty of articles on coat care and grooming tips to help you get started.

How do Lhasa Apsos compare to similar breeds?

People often confuse Lhasa Apsos with Shih Tzus, Maltese, and Havanese. While they share some physical similarities, the personalities are worlds apart. We have put together detailed breed comparisons in our “What’s the difference between…?” series to help you understand exactly what sets the Lhasa apart.

Whether you are trying to decide between a Lhasa Apso and another breed, or you just want to understand your Lhasa better, our breed guides cover everything from temperament and health to training quirks and daily life.
